The "Great Invasion" originated from the sea. It moved north across the mainland. Many fled, while some took refuge on a small concrete island called Celestia, built over a thousand years ago. Now cut off from the mainland, Celestia has become an outpost for criminals and other misfits, as well as a refuge for a group of young telepaths. Events push two of them, Dora and Pierrot, to flee the island and set sail to the mainland. There, they discover a world on the precipice of a metamorphosis, though also a world where adults are literally prisoners of their own fortresses, unintentionally preserving the "old world" at a time when a new generation could guide society towards a better humanity. Celestia is the most ambitious and successful graphic novel to date by one of the world's most exciting storytellers, Manuele Fior (Red Ultramarine and Blackbird Days). The novel showcases his singular talents as a once-in-a-generation visual artist and a deeply empathetic writer who uses science fiction to look to the future of humanity. Fior proves he remains one of the finest painters in comics." — Publishers Weekly "Celestia is a revelation and one of the best books I've read this year. Manuele Fior's expressive and beautifully human artwork brings the ancient city of Celestia and its many fascinating residents to life in ways that will stay with you long after you've finished the book." — Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth) "A haunting story of a cabal of telepaths, prophetic poets, and beautifully empty cities. Where shared dreams can both connect and isolate. Boldly painted and utterly moving. Every panel is a work of art." — Matt Kindt (MIND MGMT, Grass Kings) "Remarkably beautiful... I enjoyed each new spread's lovely artwork while watching the characters struggle through their devastated world." — NPR "An imaginative and skillfully told story about characters and a world reeling from trauma but poised for a new beginning. Fior's talent for conveying emotion evokes both heartache and awe." — Library Journal The story of a nameless father and son trying to survive with their humanity intact in a postapocalyptic wasteland where Earth's natural resources have been diminished, and some survivors are left to raise others for meat, The Road is one of Cormac McCarthy's bleakest and most prescient novels. See below for info on the novel. This first official graphic novel adaptation of McCarthy's work is illustrated by acclaimed French cartoonist Manu Larcenet, who ably transforms the world depicted by McCarthy's spare and brutal prose into stark ink drawings that add an additional layer to this haunting tale of family love and human perseverance. Cormac McCarthy personally approved the making of this book before his death, and the adaptation bears the approval of the McCarthy estate. PREORDER FOR AN AUGUST 27 SHIP DATE RELATED: Fantasy YA | Historical YA The Nightwing Annual 2024 delves into the backstory of Beatrice (Bea) Bennett, a former love interest from Dick Grayson's who made a reappearance earlier this year, In that storyline, it was discovered that Bea had a secret life as the Pirate Queen of the The Crew of the Crossed Keys, a secret buccaneer society that helped to found Bludhaven. Now I'm all in on a good pirate story, but I have to admit that the Pirate Queen arc was one of my least favorite Nightwing stories in a long time. As such, I was hesitant as to how the annual would unfold since Bea — not Dick — is actually the primary player. As it turns out, Bea's story is a tad more convoluted than previously suspected. Orphaned after losing her mother in a boating / murder — a DC trope that wore thin a long time ago — Bea was adopted by Ruben Blüd, the captain of The Crew of Crossed Keys. Before she can devote her life to the pirate life however, Bea is determined to uncover who was behind her mother's death. To gain the skills she needs, she enrolls in St. Hadrian's Finishing School for Girls and eventually joins the covert operations organization known as Spyral, which Dick also infiltrated in an unrelated storyline (SEE Grayson the Superspy Omnibus (2022 Edition) for more on that). At this point, Bea's resume is becoming a little unbelievable and a lot of this plot feels like it's been cranked a few too many times through the retcon machine. Honestly, the best parts of the annual are where Bea's story intersects with Dick's — which should not be a surprise since it is actually a Nightwing annual. In particular, Bea coping with the emotional fallout of Dick recovering his memory, ending their relationship, and returning to the Bat Family, which was the conclusion of their first storyline all the way back in Nightwing Vol 4 #50, (2018). When Bea ducks into an alleyway to avoid Dick and Barbara walking hand-in-hand down the street, it is actually quite heartbreaking. The annual was written and illustrated by Travis Moore (SEE Sins of the Black Flamingo as a good example), who does wonderful stuff (IMHO) but the rambling exposition and copious plot twists make this a less enjoyable outing for Nightwing.

How can you go wrong with a glass graphic novel about a gay nihilist/cat burglar who, assisted by a witch, a fallen angel, and a golem who, when not in mud form is a sweet-natured twunk, battle American neo-Nazis for supernatural relics in modern day Florida? Answer, you can't. This book is absolutely ridiculous yet somehow it works beautifully. I hope there's a sequel.
